Ashlee is an experienced physiotherapist with a wealth of knowledge. She carries not only a Doctor of Physiotherapy degree, but also previous degrees in Exercise Science & Psychology. She also has a keen interest in Women’s Health and Sports Rehabilitation.

On the weekend one of our Physios, Caz, attended the Complete Hip Course run by Andrew Wallis from the Hip & Groin Clinic. Read some of the key take-home messages from the course:

• Hip Dysplasia is incredibly common, particularly in younger females and is incredibly prevalent even in asymptomatic patients.

•Femoracetabular impingement is more common in younger males, and also has a high prevalence in asymptomatic patients.

•Anteversion or retroversion of the acetabulum or the femur can contribute to further symptoms and limit range of motion

• Activity modification is one of the first things to do in treatment and has a profound effect on the rest of the rehab process.

• Don’t jump to start on strength work too early – pain and swelling must be under control to have appropriate effect

• When starting to do rehab, always start the exercise from the correct position and posture, as an exercise done with poor form can further irritate the hip

• hip flexor and internal rotation strength training is fantastic but can be incredibly irritable if added in too soon

• manual therapies and traction can have a positive impact on the pain response, and therefore allow rehab to progress

What is Pregnancy-related Pelvic Girdle Pain (PPGP)?

PPGP is a broad term which describes pain at the front or back of the pelvis, sometimes with referral into the glute. It is an incredibly common condition in people that are pregnant, and can be felt during various activities such as weight bearing, standing from a chair and climbing stairs.

What does the GRDL belt do?

The GRDL belt was designed by a Physiotherapist based on evidence and clinical experience, and can assist in reducing pain and severity of symptoms, as well as improving function in those with PPGP. At Move Health we use the belt alongside various other treatments to provide our PPGP patients with a holistic approach to recovery.

What a beautiful day for Melbourne’s biggest running event – it was fantastic to see so many of our clients out on the streets of Melbourne. Whether this was your first 5km, or 10th time running a marathon, the importance of recovery must not be understated.

In the link in bio (on our public access blog) is a great article which runs through the evidence behind different types of recovery such as ice therapy, massage, nutrition and more. It may help you decide which is best for you.

We encourage our clients to recover using the following methods:

Hydration and nutrition

Active recovery if you are not injured (e.g. walking through water, short walks, slow jog, bike ride)

Cryotherapy or ice therapy (optional)

Massage/foam rolling (optional)

There is a plethora of recovery methods from hot-cold plunges to simple rest. If you are injured, the best thing you can do is to see someone early to assess your injury and decipher between delayed-onset muscle soreness versus other conditions.

The spine is a resilient structure, although understandably, when people experience back pain it can feel like the complete opposite.

The structure of the spine allows various planes of movement, shock absorption, loading and other incredible tasks.

Whilst we do not recommend that every spine should be able to do these actions when you have acute or subacute back pain, we encourage our clients to remember that the spine is a strong structure. Studies even show that the way we think about our body, particularly during periods of injury or pain, can dictate our pain response.

Melbourne’s HYROX event is this weekend!

We wish all members of our community competing in the 2024 Melbourne HYROX event this weekend the best of luck!

For those that are not familiar with the HYROX event, it is a course which alternates between 1km runs followed by a functional exercise (such as lunges or burpees) and then repeated 8 times.

This tough event is derived from High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and challenges many different aspects of physical fitness such as endurance, strength, power and stability.

There are many benefits of completing this type of high intensity functional training, and it can be a great way for people to be pushed in multiple aspects of physical fitness.

Recurrent lateral ankle sprains are a common injury which we hear about in everyday life.
👣
As a Physiotherapist, I most commonly see patients for a knee or other injury and when probed further they might say something in passing about having "a few rolled ankles from time to time".

On further investigation, many of these patients have laxity in their ankles, and a significant reduction in balance.

Some of these patients, note that they painfully sprain their ankle a few times a year or even a few times a month!

Rehabilitation is evidenced to reduce ankle sprain recurrence, however, there are so few people who actually complete a full stint of ankle rehabilitation as their is often a perception of an ankle injury not being as important as a repetitive knee or shoulder injury.

If you are a person who has had multiple recurrent ankle sprains, it is in my opinion worthwhile getting it assessed and managed properly to reduce the long-term effects on the rest of the body.
